It's a slow afternoon, befitting a day after work. The sun taunts me
with his inexorable escape behind the horizon, an escape I can't
replicate. Yet, as I wipe the sweat from my brow I realize that my
escape is coming to me instead.

A girl is walking up the hill I stand on, her curvy body bouncing as
she walks in ways that automatically dispel any thoughts of work and
stress from my mind, replacing them instead with more pleasurable
pursuits. A smile spreads across my face, as it always does when I
look at her.

Her usually dark brown hair looks brighter now as the last of the
sun's rays weave themselves through it, to compete and fail with the
gleam in her eyes as she stares in mine.

Illia says "Hey handsome..." as her body presses into mine. We kiss, a
gentle kiss that promise more as the day turns to night. "How was
work?"

I chuckle at her comment. How she can consider me handsome in my
current state, my jeans and shirt covered with sawdust and wooden
chips, is beyond me. Yet her smile and eyes tell me this is her honest
opinion; she's not just teasing me. And to answer her I pull out a
small wooden figurine I sculptured just for her.

As soon as I hand it to her, she squeals "A penguin!", absorbed in
it's detail. I immediately smile at her reaction. I know she likes
them, and since they went extinct just some years ago, the last ones
she saw were back when she was just a child.

"As you can see something came to mind, something you like.  And now,
the final touch... " I hold her wrist, stilling the hand holding the
bird sculpture in her palm. I then gently blow over it, activating the
dormant enchantments within. With a slow creak the bird's neck moves
to the side, and then the whole figure trembles, as if it was drying
itself. It then looks at Illia, chirping like the real penguins used
to, and walking towards her.

She smiles again, holding it to her chest, hugging it as you would a
living thing. Which it was, kind of.

She looks at me, and hugs me again with one arm while holding the
wooden chick with the other. "It's so cute!" Her smile and genuine
happiness bring a smile to my face, and make the essence investment
more than worth it.

I hug her in return, pressing her body against mine again. "So, to
what do I owe this pleasure?" I was referring to her coming all the
way to my workshop. Usually I get out before she does and get things
ready at home while she finishes her patients. That she's out so early
is unusual. That she's here even more so.

She gives me that mischievous grin of hers, and begins to pull me by
one arm, chick on her other arm. "Well, since we've been so dutifully
working and making sure everything's in order, I think it's high time
we take some time to ourselves." She looks back at me and smiles,
hugging my arm tighter.

I see her struggling with the penguin chick, so I pick it up and put
it on her head. It quickly burrows in her hair, nestling within it
while messing minimally with her hairstyle. "That chick is a bit
smarter than a regular pet. He'll try and stay near you, can follow
basic commands, and doesn't need food."

I smile at the jab. Simulacra don't need any other sustenance than the
essence that animates them, provided by the enchanter who creates it.
The downside is that as long as that essence is invested in the
Simulacra it cannot be used for anything else. Yet, I cannot imagine a
better purpose for a shard of my soul than making my love happy.

She walks with me, wrapping her other now-freed hand around my arm,
yet walking slowly, paying close attention to the movements of the
chick on her head, and laughing every once in a while whenever the
chick's movements tickle her.

Seeing as how she's absorbed with the chick's movements, I decide to
bring her back to today. "So, seeing as how you got all the way out
here, you must have a plan, right?"

She grins again, her lips almost promising that whatever tonight's
plans are, at least some of it will be spent horizontally. "Well, I
have expectations, yes." She then laughs to herself, before saying
"But no plans. We'll decide what to do now together. After all," she
says, kissing my arm lovingly, "it's for the both of us."

I squeeze her, tickling her and eliciting a chirp from the chick on
her hair from the sudden movements. We always get into playful banter
regarding where to eat or what to do when we have time to ourselves.
That we're gonna get into it now, and she knows, does not escape me.
So instead I surprise her.

"Perfect. That means I get to plan this, for you." She looks at me,
incredulous. She was expecting, and what's more, she wanted the
playful argument. But I ignore the look on her face and go on,
savoring her expression. "Just follow me, and enjoy." I smile, and
lift her in my arms, kissing her passionately.

The chick releases a hectic sequence of chirps, almost falling from
Illia's head. "Hey!", she squeals, hesitant of pulling away from me
yet protective of the bird. "Watch out for Fluffy!" She picks the
small penguin from her head, stroking in affectionately.

I look at her, then smile softly to myself. Only she could have picked
a more ironic name. She looks at my expression, and asks, defiant but
concerned, "What's wrong with Fluffy?" I only laugh, sweeping her into
my arms and hugging her tight as we walk along. "Nothing, love.
Nothing's wrong with Fluffy."
This is the first piece I've written in a while... I just wrote whatever came out, and what came out was an interesting new setting...

I'll explore it further...
